explore the region

The Lake Ceresio Loop (also known as Lake Lugano) is one of the region's most iconic and accessible cycling routes. Designed for road bikes and free of challenging climbs, this scenic loop follows the shores of Lake Lugano, passing through historic villages, shaded stretches, and some of the most stunning viewpoints in southern Switzerland.

With a total distance of 55 km and only 270 m of elevation gain, the route can be completed in about 2 hours at a leisurely pace by a moderately fit cyclist. It's therefore ideal for cycle tourists, international travelers, weekend riders, and anyone who wants to explore the region without pressure.

Starting point & access

The loop begins and ends in Mendrisio, at Ciclosprint, a popular cyclist meeting point and bike shop located next to the Mendrisio San Martino train station. The tour can be started from any point, but for practical reasons, we've chosen Mendrisio as the starting point.

The starting point is easily accessible:

  • by train, including international connections
  • by car, with several public parking lots and multi-storey car parks within a 1 km radius

This makes the route particularly convenient for visitors staying in Lugano, the Mendrisiotto region, or nearby northern Italy.

Route description

From Mendrisio, the route follows the lake in a clockwise direction, heading towards the left branch of Lake Lugano (Ceresio).

The first village you come across is Riva San Vitale, known for its pleasant lakeside promenade and its historic center. Here, you'll find the Baptistery of San Giovanni, one of the oldest Christian monuments in Switzerland, dating back to the 5th century—a testament to the village's importance in Roman and early Christian times.

Continuing along the shore, you reach Brusino Arsizio, one of the quietest and most picturesque stretches of the entire loop. Historically, it was a fishing and trading village.

The route then briefly enters Italy, at Porto Ceresio, where the landscape takes on a decidedly more Mediterranean character. This lakeside village offers several cafés and is a great stop for a break.

After Ponte Tresa, the route re-enters Switzerland towards Agno, continuing along the lake to one of the most evocative moments of the tour: Morcote, listed among the most beautiful villages in Switzerland. Its porticoed houses, stone alleys, and lakeside setting create an unmistakable atmosphere.

The return to Mendrisio crosses the Melide dam, a historic structure connecting the two sides of the lake. Here, the panoramic cycling and walking path is highly recommended, offering one of the most iconic views of Lake Lugano. Additional cycling paths between Maroggia and Melano further enhance safety and comfort while cycling.
