explore the region

The Muggio Valley Tour is a short yet challenging road cycling route that explores the traditional villages of the Muggio Valley, Switzerland's southernmost valley. Far from the busy lakeside roads, this route offers a quieter, more rural cycling experience, characterized by narrow roads, chestnut groves, and stone villages.

With a distance of approximately 40.5 km and an elevation gain of approximately 1,000 m, this loop is more challenging than the lakeside routes and is particularly suitable for experienced cyclists, touring cyclists seeking a more challenging ride, and those who appreciate long climbs combined with the local character.

Starting point & access

The loop begins and ends in Mendrisio, at Ciclosprint, a well-known cyclist meeting point and bike shop located next to the Mendrisio San Martino train station. The tour can be started from any point, but for practical reasons, we've chosen Mendrisio as the starting point.

The starting point is easily accessible:

  • by train, including international connections
  • by car, with several public parking lots and multi-storey car parks within a 1 km radius

This makes the route particularly convenient for visitors staying in Lugano, the Mendrisiotto region, or nearby northern Italy.

Route description

Leaving Mendrisio, the route quickly leaves the urban area and begins to climb towards the Muggio Valley. The first climb through Morbio Superiore and Castel San Pietro offers a steady and gradual ascent. The road then continues towards Sagno, one of the valley's most characteristic villages. This section follows narrow roads through wooded areas and open landscapes towards the Po Valley. Once you reach Sagno, you return to the same road to rejoin the main valley road.

Those wishing to reduce the total elevation gain can skip the round trip to Sagno and continue directly along the valley's main road. This alternative route shortens the route and eliminates a significant portion of the climb, while preserving the essence of the Muggio Valley.

Back on the main valley road, the terrain becomes progressively more undulating and hilly as you progress through the valley. This section requires careful management of your pace: short climbs and descents follow one another without long recovery sections.

Beyond Muggio, the road turns toward Roncapiano. The last 3 km are particularly steep and represent one of the most challenging sections of the entire route. Roncapiano is a dead-end road, so once you reach the village, you return along the same road.

Back on the main valley road, the route continues toward Cabbio. Here, the character of the ride changes abruptly: you turn right onto a very steep and technical descent, which quickly descends to the opposite side of the valley. This section requires good cycling skills, especially in the shade or on wet asphalt.

At the end of the descent, the road climbs back toward Casima, adding a final, sustained effort before the route gradually heads back toward Mendrisio.

Coffee stops & recommended breaks

Although the Muggio Valley is a rural and sparsely populated area, it offers some authentic, high-quality stops, perfectly in keeping with the character of the route.

  • Ul Furmighin – Sagno
A grotto-style stop, much appreciated by cyclists. Ideal for a coffee, a light meal, or a short break in a relaxed, local atmosphere.
  • Osteria Manciana – Scudellate
A classic Ticino osteria offering regional dishes in an authentic setting. Perfect for a longer break.
  • Birreria Nov Matag – Mendrisio (post-ride)
Back in the city center, this craft brewery is the perfect place to celebrate the ride with a well-deserved beer.
